COMPETITION AREA

There will be barriers surrounding the competition area. We kindly ask that only competitors enter this area and only when their category is going ahead. Spectators will need to stay on the viewing side, as will all competitors until their category is called.

PATTERNS

Patterns will be judged via a flag & elimination system. Two competitors will perform a pattern at the same time and the judges will vote who performed the stronger pattern. The winner goes into the next round and the opponent is eliminated.

All competitors must perform either their current pattern or their previous pattern. 1st degree black belts can perform Choong Moo if they wish. There is no downgrading for a competitor not choosing their current pattern.

TAEKWON-DO SPARRING

Points are scored by strikes that ‘clearly’ land in a controlled way and are ‘visually’ seen by the judges. Taekwon-do sparring also has a warning system. Warnings will be given for kicking too low, kicking to the back, leaving the ring, turning away, falling over and excessive contact. There is no limit on the amount of warnings a competitor can receive. For every 3 warnings the competitor will receive a minus point.
Sparring is light/semi contact. We will be strict on the amount of power competitors will be allowed to use. The idea is to score points through skill not by hurting your opponent. The referees have the ability to disqualify you immediately if the contact is too heavy.

Points will be awarded as follows:
1 point – punch to the body or head
1 point – kick to the body
2 points – kick to the head
Any jumping kick that lands before you reach the ground will be +1 point. For example: A jump kick to the body is 2 points and a jump kick
to the head is 3 points.

Junior colour belts will spar for one round of 1 minute with a final of 1 minute 30 secs.
Teens and Adults will spar for one round of 1 minute 30 secs with a final of 2 minutes.
Black belts will spar for one 2 minute round with a final of 2 x 2 minute rounds.

Each judge will raise either a Red or a Blue flag to indicate who scored the most points. The winner will go into the next round and the opponent will be eliminated.

In the event of a draw both competitors will continue for another 30 seconds. Following that if it is still a draw, it will then be first point wins.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE

The special technique will be the Flying High Kick. Competitors must start and finish in a guarding block. You must perform a bicycle front snap kick. If any part of your body touches the floor other than your feet, you don’t hit the target, you use an incorrect kick or you don’t use the correct tool, then you will be disqualified. Each round the target will get higher.

A following round only occurs for competitors that have managed to hit the target. The competition ends when there is only one competitor left. If there are at least two people left then a silver medal will also be given out. If it isn’t clear, then there will be one gold.

POWER
The white adult’s boards will be the only boards used within the power categories. For the first round it will be a stepping in side kick. Second round a turning kick and third round a front elbow strike. If another round is needed then the technique used will be randomly selected.

Competitors will instruct the judges discretely how many boards they would like to break. 1 point will be given for each board that is broken but competitors will only be given the points if they break all of the boards they selected. For example, if you choose a two board side kick but only break one board, then you would receive zero points. Whereas, if you choose one board and break it, then you would receive one point.

A following round only occurs for competitors that have drawn on points. It ends when there is only one competitor left. When there are at least two people left then a silver medal will also be given out. If it isn’t clear then there will just be one gold.

CATEGORIES
As this is an in-house competition and only open to students at MMA, we have had to move some competitors up a category either by grade, height or weight. This is to ensure that there is a category for each competitor to take part in. Where there is at least two people in a category, the category will go ahead. For categories where there would have been only one contender we have moved that contender up to the next group. Anyone that has been put into a different age group, we will contact to confirm that you are happy with this.

DON’T FORGET
Please ensure you bring plenty of water for the day, (there is a water fountain on site). We will have drinks, snacks and hot food available to buy.

RESULTS
Whilst we understand that it is a competitive environment, we ask all competitors and parents to please respect the results and decisions that are made. The officials are volunteers that are giving up their time to ensure that this event and experience can go ahead. Once a referee has made a decision, that decision is final.

We would like to wish you all the best for the competition and we hope you enjoy the day.
