The Truth About Failing & Giving Up

Many people use the words ‘failure’ and ‘giving up’ in the same context not fully understanding the huge difference these two terms hold.  The definition of failure is ‘The fact of someone or something not succeeding’. The definition of giving up is ‘To abandon (oneself) to a particular feeling, influence, or activity’

Failure is something that cannot be avoided in life and is one of the main building blocks in healthy development. By failing at something you want to succeed or do well in highlights where you went wrong or what you could have done better. Failure is how you improve as a human being. You evaluate the reason for your failure and focus on what needs to be fixed to attain the success you set out to achieve.

Giving up is when you abandon pursuing what you want to achieve or when you stop believing in yourself! Maybe you have failed too many times and are unable to see what you need to improve and now lack the motivation to continue in what you set out to achieve. Or maybe you no longer believe that you are a capable of achieving success anymore, so you give up and chase something easier.

Throughout everyone’s lives we all succumb to failure, but it is by our own choosing to let that failure become a lesson that we learn & improve from or choose to give up on.

At Miles Martial Arts we understand the importance of each student achieving success and this can be accomplished through a well-structured grading system in which students have to meet a minimum criteria in order to attain their next belt. Whether you are an adult or a child and you fail a grading you are then faced with the dilemma of accepting failure and improving yourself ready for the next time. Or giving up as you don’t feel like it’s something you are capable of achieving.

Believing in yourself is one of the most powerful mindsets you can have, and this is created by achieving success, but not always in the way that you think? Something as simple as making your bed in the morning, eating breakfast or completing what you set out to do in your day means you have succeeded.

Never give up on what you want to succeed in and learn from failure, don’t resent it. One day you will achieve your dream and our hope at Miles Martial Arts is that you learn these lessons and whether you continue practicing martial arts or not you will never forget what you have learned, and you will bring all that you know to the next challenge In your life!

“Life is a struggle and the potential for failure is ever present, but those who live in fear of failure, or hardship, or embarrassment will never achieve their potential. Without pushing your limits, without occasionally sliding down the rope headfirst, without daring greatly, you will never know what is truly possible in your life.” – William H Mcraven
